Programming can and should be fun, elegant, and beautiful. Developers, like every other profession, should demand good working conditions, and when the job is writing software this includes getting to make sure the software is pleasant to work with. A certain portion of developers think that our field is so different that it is somehow unprofessional to make these demands. They are wrong. A different portion of developers feel that the existence of beauty in our field means that it is unreasonable for there to be blemishes and unpleasant parts as well. They are also wrong.
