The "go deaf and die early of lung disease" part is from family history. Both my grandfathers. My dad went deaf from the noise in textile factories, but the shift from cotton to artificial fibres saved his lungs; much less dust. He lived to be 94 years old. I only spent a few weeks working in a weaving shed, so my ears still work well. The noise was terrible, from hammers hitting shuttles to send them across, then the heddles switching the threads.
