they still give at least a wibe of what others opinion is about something. A lot of upvotes or downvotes tells of strong opinions, lack of negative votes tells of lack of negative opinions, a lot of both tells that thing being voted might be controversial. personally i appreciate honest downvotes a lot, since they let me know i might be wrong about something or at least might need to reconsider.
