Doing acids and bases today, students understand why the general acid formula is HA (A- anion produced).
But why is a general base formula MOH? I don't know what the M stands for...I just know that's what we use.

@brianb@fosstodon.org I think A and B refer to “A”cid and “B”ase via the equilibria: HA ⇌ H⁺ + A⁻ B + H₂O ⇌ BH⁺ + OH⁻ I would assume MOH is a reference to “M”etal hydroxide: KOH, NaOH, etc. It's hard to tell sometimes where this stuff comes from… very murky!
