He was involved in two people's death, and was cast as the murderer. He's dead because no one with the power cared about a Black man in Texas.
This is ~always~ what 'tough on crime' meant. Cold blooded execution of people the state will not tolerate based on white supremacy.
His confession was 'taken' while he was on drugs; They made sure the jury had no Black people on it; They used rap lyrics to show 'he'd kill again'; SOMEONE ELSE CONFESSED TO PULLING THE TRIGGER!
