May Morning, and Up The Workers! But I am shocked - SHOCKED, I tell you - that there seems to be no maypole dancing in Dorset! In Oxfordshire, where we used to live, May Morning was definitely A THING. On-line research reveals maypoles today in Devon and Somerset, but Warwickshire, which has the biggest maypoles, also seems to be letting the Old Ways fade. 🙄 https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101382856-the-maypole-welford-on-avon

@ancientsounds@mastodonapp.uk That's because #Warwickshire celebrates the 1st of May either earlier or later than the rest of the world. It's not a day any more. #HillCloseGardens #Warwick #MayDay #MaypoleDancing #RadfordSemele

@ancientsounds@mastodonapp.uk We used to dance around a maypole when I was a kid in the north of England (1970s). It was part of a May Day festival. Lots of fun although you’re basically just skipping round in circles from what I can recall.
