The design was originally commissioned to a French sculptor who was asked to illusteate the triumph of religion over the genius of evil (la génie du mal). His brother created a scuplture of Lucifer for the design, but it was deemed far too sexy and alluring, tvery much Lucifer into the interesting character. The church authorities had the figure removed, and told the original designer to create one himself. He responded by designing one that was even sexier.
