Imagine my surprise... Drug policy, like other moral panics is driven by emotion, mob mentality and a total misunderstanding of what drugs are and how people get stuck in addiction. It plays politically to act as if everybody has total agency over these behaviours and choose to do this 'BAD' thing and thus must be punished, parentally. The fact the war on drugs a. condemns literally millions to abject misery and suffering, b. was lost from the start and c. empowers terrible groups (including terrorists!) doing actually bad, unspeakable things has no sway over this simple-minded emotional response.
