@kate Probably a lost stone fishing sinker that's cracked in half and been worn down by wave action. There are very ancient examples but those aren't so smooth inside and they usually had some kind of cord through them, not a ferrous rod explaining the rust stains. https://www.pallatrax.co.uk/product-category/stonze/
