@katestarbird’s 2023 work on collective sensemaking has useful things to say about rumouring, which is different from disinformation and misinformation. Rumour may align with evidence or may not, but the process of hashing things out is key.
Online the priority given to speaking over listening is inherent in the process. The land value of listening is underestimated, and so the vast data centre of assumptions gets built right there.

I was just starting to think through some communications dynamics in Ostrom's rules for successful commons. This should help.
