In computer science, logging gets is name from the nautical term "ships log". The ship's log get's its name from a "chip log", a piece of wood attached to a string. Sailors through the piece of wood overboard and would count the number of knots unwound by the rope as the log drifted behind the ship. I read this explanation today, including the "chip log" part, and I can't get the fact that "ship log" and "chip log" rhyme. Was that on purpose or were the terms originally created in Greek or something?
