@ozdreaming @dnkboston OH...as long as we're talking about what the world did before petroleum, I did find a good recipe for wooden wagon axle grease. You mix in graphite with rendered goose fat, and I think it was equal parts of each. If you don't mind the odor, you could probably use tallow or lard instead of goose fat. Humanity lived without petroleum before and we can do it again.
