"how did they make schematics before CAD?"
with... physical stencils!
(i'm old enough to have handled some of these as 'obsolete hand-me-down' objects, but young enough to have always had CAD around)
apparently in my father's day universities were first starting to drop "drafting" as a mandatory course/module. seems to be completely gone nowadays, replaced by computer clicky-clicky hell

@r I had no idea these were a thing and I would have loved something like that the few times I had to draw (admittedly simple) circuit diagrams (mostly because I suck at drawing rectangles)
