Talking about annoyances, there was a time when there were smoking and non-smoking sections on the trains. Everybody preferred to book non-smoking. Even the smokers, who would just go to the smoking sections to smoke. So, if you booked late, the only seats available were in the smoking sections. It was pure hell.

@leffe@social.linux.pizza Ugh! I remember those, only experienced them in Croatia. Even after smoking was banned smokers still smoked through the window (2018, on a Zagreb-Split night train, haven't taken it since). They most likely still smoke. I hate saying this, but in the Balkans flying and Flixbus are much better options.
