@anildash I used to be on Flickr. It has gone away from it's web 2.0 roots. It's nice they are hosting images of Artemis II. The rest of us who hosted there have varying opinions. Mine is negative.

@anildash Not enough characters here to be unhip to shout how much I love flickr https://cogdogblog.com/2024/02/flickr-at-20/ Worth mentioning they never wrecked their public API, allowing amateurs like me to create my own tools/sites. And so early they were with tags when we swooned over "folksonomy". There's an almost infinite spiral of niche interest groups (e.g. for rusty mailboxes? Vegefitti?). Note: Flickr Commons long preceded SmugMug

@anildash Thanks for writing this. NASA has (or has had in the past) over thirty Flickr accounts for various things. They're not all active (though some are) but it's a huge number of public domain or CC-licensed images. If you start from this query you can see some of them up top (further down, just people using the name or talking about something else altogether). https://www.flickr.com/search/people/?username=NASA

@anildash Great to read such a well done history and summary of why the “new” websites and values of those now ancient days of the early years of 2004-5 made a difference and continue to make a difference. I started using Flickr in late 2004 and began my own account there early 2005. I still maintain my account after these 20+ years, almost unheard-of longevity for a personal project online. Those were exciting and fun days and I even knew other members online like the legendary Stewart and Caterina. As it happened, what a wise course the Flickr Foundation, Commons and other endeavors set in motion. Photography meetups began back then and what fun they were! (Anyone remember Striatic Does America? Or maybe when Trey Ratliff began his Stuck In Customs world events with meetups?) Thanks for your own many contributions too, bravo!
