No, the author has lost me here by assuming that all such Ideal Types are always useful. Think about how historical labels such as 'Celtic' and 'feudal' have often obscured, not aided, historical inquiry.

@Loukas Not a historian, do you have some tips on reading for a lay person? All of Celtic, Norse, and religion are things i'd like to know more about. To my mind "organised religion" is a totally different beast than the old belief-systems. My interest stems part from how language and culture has connections to far-away places, and partly how this is weaponised by demagogues. I find these things fascinating and scary at the same time.
