when i was a kid, my stepdad would always by the bay area’s version of street roots. we’d be eating in a restaurant, running errands, or seeing friends. it didn’t matter at what time or if he was in a rush, he always went up and chatted with the vendor. he’s a terrible man and i will never speak to him again but wow im remembering how much relationships with houseless neighbors meant to him. that is until he evicted 2 families to buy a house with my mom and renovated it into a single unit dwelling. she is terrified of houseless people and i think thats a big part of why his attitude shifted. anyway im reading street roots articles about albina and the sweeps this coming summer and i remembered that this news paper is more than just an income, and that maybe my family should have read the articles to prevent the new money path they chose. the stories are truly crucial for understanding the reality of our social climate, i cry everytime i read street roots. #portland #homeless #gentrification #streetroots #displacement #Community
