For those keeping score at home, I successfully outsmarted the problem not long after my prior toot. tldr: Windows had gotten into an unbootable state. After a clean install it wanted to apply updates, but the first cumulative update it wanted to do kept hanging at 35% with the mobo showing various flavors of RAM failure. Lots of troubleshooting later, we finally did a fresh install from newer media (ie, we started from AFTER the bad CU) and all was well.
