What's the line between Google saying in 1998 "we could try throwing lots of commodity hardware at this big problem", and AI companies now buying up the entire computer supply chain?
Like, are the AI companies a sudden jump in ambition, or has it been increasing gradually? Were there any big supply chain crunches like this earlier in computing history?

@christianp I don't have any data on this, but I'm pretty sure the number and size of datacentres have been increasing for years. But I don't remember any supply crunches that weren't caused by an external factor, like Covid, or that time there was a fire in the factory that made the epoxy for most of the world's RAM supply.
