The US in particular has long taken a delight in overthrowing democratic governments just because the party that was voted in was opposed to the US. Usually because of overt US interference. Literally the only time in my life that I can think of that Western governments acted according to their stated beliefs was the sanctions against South Africa for apartheid. And even that was lead by public opinion first, with government action trailing way behind. Realpolitik has always been the winner.
