Can anyone share tips on enjoying / surviving my first furry con? I've wanted to go to one for ages and now that I have a chance I realize I have no idea what to expect, what to do, and how to finally enjoy and be social in this community that I've only been part of from afar... Additional clarifications (keeping them in one place): - I'm planning to go to Furlandia - I've been to a few non-furry cons in the area before, but I don't know how much that translates #furry #furrycon #AskFedi

@anteumbra@yiff.life Stay hydrated. Depending on where the con takes place, it's probably going to be pretty warm.Make sure you have two meals a day, at least. Grabbing food with other people will be hard to coordinate, and you will have to take lead sometimes to make sure you and others eat. Also, bring snacks like granola/cereal bars or something else you can quickly eat one handed on the go.Mask up if/when possible. Con crud is real, not to mention COVID.Overwhelmed? Take a break. Find a quiet space or head back to your room.Elavators are pretty much universally hell, but again depends on the venue. Be prepared for long wait times, or take the stairs.

@anteumbra@yiff.life make sure you catch up on your sleep before you go because sleeping through most of a saturday sucks when you went to a hotel specifically to go to a con and then don't make it out of bed until 5 pm

@anteumbra@yiff.life -Warm food is a morale factor, do not ignore it, even when pressed for time. -Most furs want to meet more furs, interact as you have motivation for. -If you want to build longer term contacts, it helps to have a calling card / Linktree link, so they can find out again on the internets. -If of that persuasion, ease into partying / drinking. Overdoing it the first night will hurt your whole convention week. -Same goes for dancing, being too sore to climb stairs is a thing. -On that topic, take the stairs, if at all available, and not ridiculously high floor. You will save time, get a bit of exercise, and reduce load on elevators for those that need them even more (disabled, suiters...). -If a convention with big dealer's den, plan ahead - check the map, see who you at least want to look at closer. -On that topic, go in early enough, even when not hunting for commission slots. Some sell out quickly, or do not do the final day(s).

@anteumbra@yiff.life Most is said already. Important thing from my side: Try not get to enthusiastic and take breaks before breaking down. - Even if your are having fun and everything feels nice you spend your energy. Second: If the Con was good, prepare for post con depression and have a plan to deal with that. If the con was awesome, the hole after that can feel really deep.

@anteumbra@yiff.life Try to make some plans with friends in advance, for meeting up or attending events together. Not all of those plans will work out in the end (and that's perfectly normal) but it'll give you a bit of structure. Cons can feel very overwhelming when you're in the middle of them. If you can find a "con mate", a friend who wants to attend the con together with you, someone to hang out with "by default" so you're never alone, that's even better! I've written some long form reports about my own con experiences, starting with my first Eurofurence: https://www.kianga.eu/articles/2023/eurofurence-27/ They're not really guides, but maybe they can be helpful. :3 I hope you'll have a great time!

@anteumbra@yiff.life As someone who essentially rawdogged NFC this year with only an acquaintance there yet. What helped a ton was going to all the meet and greets that I found personally interesting (deer, kinks, etc.). You naturally meet likeminded people there and from there you kinda branch out a lot. If you have friends with you that's great but make sure to also roam around on your own at times to meet other folk. It is great to have them as a fallback when you are struggling. Someone else already said that plans will fall through. What I did was browse through the NFC con app and mark all the things that were vaguely interesting to me. There is a lot of overlap and there will be things that will fall through there as well - but having a full schedule to use when I had nothing else to do was really great. No idea if it is as active in the US but installing and setting up BARQ also helped. Great to find cool people at the con.

  • @anteumbra@yiff.life whenever you get the chance, take a look at the event line up and figure out what you're interested in going to! CostCo! Absolutely make a trip to the nearest CostCo if you can! Grab as many snacks and sandwich stuff as you can to eat in your hotel room! It will save you a lot of money. Speaking of money, it's almost certainly going to end up more expensive than you think it is. Estimate how much you think you need to save up, then save up more! Don't impulse buy in the Dealer's Den on Day 1 unless you see something you really want selling out super fast. Try to make a trip around to see what else is available so you don't end up with Buyer's Remorse (you almost certainly will anyway, but you'll have less if you do this). Go with a friend you trust! Going alone is kinda ass. And don't bet on meeting up with friends you're not rooming with; everybody is going to have 20 things they wanna do and that means 10 of them aren't happening. And that's not personal, that's just how the con goes. So going with somebody guarantees you won't be going alone and you'll have a lot more fun. Try to be there for Day 1 when not a lot is happening, and even before you register, just take the time to wander around the venue and get a feel for the layout. This will make it easier to find your way around when it's crowded, harder to see and especially if crowds make you anxious. Building on that top point, find places that are less crowded and less noisy, especially if you're rooming outside of the main venue. Furry cons are overstimulating, so finding places you can decompress when you can't/don't want to go back to your room can help a lot. If you can't get a room in the main venue, it is, in my honest opinion, worth paying a premium to stay within easy walking distance. Did this at TFF this year and it made things a lot better. And finally, bookmark any of these comments you found helpful for easy reference if/when you get to go a con! I'd also love to hear how it goes for you and if any of my rambling was helpful to you. :heart_nb:
