When a society and culture prize domination and control, ableism is not only inevitable, it will unavoidably be considered a virtuous thing - if value comes from the ability to coerce towards one's will, then inability of all kinds will by necessity be treated as lesser. Because of this, anti-ableism and liberation are inextricable causes. We cannot attain or practice either one without also embracing the other. Scrabbling over who gets to be in control merely reproduces logics and patterns of oppression. But when we choose to reject the idea that control is good, we open ourselves up to a world that can be so much more - no longer a place of struggling on individualistic merits, but a place of care, support, collective purpose, and love.
