BTRFS and file-system compression has been an absolute boon as a penniless student with finite space on their 512 GB SSD. Even a backup snapshot scheme of five system changes, four daily, three hourly, one weekly and one monthly with spares saved to one other location should do the trick.
As BTRFS is a copy-on-write, failing catastrophic corruption which is occasionally known the happen with the filesystem. You should still be able to keep a backup of the previous states of your system and the files on them for a reasonable length of time. I used to do the very same on Arch Linux before eventually moving to NixOS.
