I have re-fixed the selection thing; hooray. I've started implementing my other search tweaks (loading all searches in background tabs; clearing the search term after searching) in the new searchbar widget, as futureproofing against the sad day when they remove the old searchbar widget completely, but it's unexpectedly hairy because they've decided to make certain properties and functions private, which appears to make them completely inaccessible to monkeypatching via userchrome.js (unless there's some trick I don't know about). This will require an expedition into the depths of the ancient hacker documentation mines. In the meantime at least I still have the old widget.
