What an excellent article.
„Silicon Valley has forgotten what normal people want (https://www.theverge.com/tldr/915176/nft-metaverse-ai-weirdos)“ by Elizabeth Lopatto over on The Verge.
The breathless insistence that LLMs are a technological revolution and we all need to get on board or be left behind is so, so annoying. Especially because I see good use cases for it, too but these are the enterprise uses Lombardo describes, like my boss, who‘s not a developer building a small but strikingly effective local macOS app to analyze large amounts of data at speed, where a web app would’ve been much less efficient. Or myself synthesizing pages upon pages of high-quality, human-made technical documentation into training materials for a colleague, saving me literal days of work.
But then I still see these tools hallucinate repeatedly no matter how much I massage a prompt.
Stop pretending what this stuff is useful for and get on with it.
