Setting up @snikket_im is really the simplest way to getting a chat server for friends and family set up. Chatting, federation and audio+video calls work out of the box (on most clients). You can even invite friends to your server straight from the mobile app. Onboarding will not become any easier than that. You just need a virtual machine on the public internet and a domain name.
