On this date in 1977, I entered the gates of HMS Raleigh, the initial entry training establishment, in Torpoint, Cornwall, to join the Royal Navy. 15th March that year was a Tuesday. The weather was wet and windy and the train between Exeter and Plymouth was delayed by several hours. There were quite a few fellow recruits on that train. We were all late arriving.
