My husband and I call each other “bro” (important: we both only have sisters, so there’s no mental comparison to an actual sibling), my sisters and I call each other “dude” and “guys,” and I feel very uncomfortable whenever anyone says the word “dudette,” but it’s still really easy to just not use group terms that others ask you not to.

Words have different meanings depending on context. If the context is "gender may matter functionally’ guy is probably representing as men guy. If your gender shouldn’t matter it is gender neutral.

Not that many, about 6.

The word “set” has 430 different definitions in the OED. I’m sure “guys” can manage 2.

Could be one more, if you’re asking.

I’ve never had sexual relations with flammable representation of guy fawkes meant to be burnt in the town square to commemorate the failure of the gun powder plot.

Context, as usual, is everything.

@Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 2026-04-29 18:03
None. Nor gals. Nor gender fluid. Nor non binary.

I had a boss that was really anal about this. We all hated it, and when she left the company everyone started using the word more than ever. It’s definitely a gender neutral term in many contexts. Like “hey guys, what up?”

1. Context matters 2. It doesn't matter if I think it's gender neutral, if someone asks me not to use it for them, I stop. Easy

OP, if you want to fuck, just say so.

@SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2026-04-28 14:09
That’s none of my business! How many men I’ve slept with is a number that _even I_ don’t know!

You're right, we should double down and use guy more often for everyone, to make sure it's gender neutral. Same with dude.
