I never knew any of this, but apparently that's why, after they went to PSX, Final Fantasy VII and VIII sucked, IX was really good, and then they never really had another good thing come out of the franchise until the character of the pink-haired knight, Claire "Lightning" Farron, who ended her sentences with "da na" (but maybe not so much the games she was in, just the character). XI was... mixed... but I'm not sure that applies here.
