Tomorrow as I write this is ANZAC Day. A time that veterans get together to renew friendships and to support their fellow veterans because only veterans can truely understand what it was like on the battlefield and the post war nightmares that haunt their dreams. We who are not veterans can be empathic but we can never truely know and understand what it was like. For us it should be a day of reflection to ask ourselves why did these wars happen and why Australia lost the flowers of several generations. It is to easy to just give glib responses like "They died for our freedom" I remember all my family members who have put on the uniform and gone to the battlefields, From Bullecourt to the Middle East to the Islands of PNG to Viet Nam. I remember them with pride but also deep sadness that they had to go. To the veterans I hope you find solace and strength in the presence of those who also walked your path. As for the rest of us why don't we take some time during the day to reflect on how we make sure that no more generations need to march on to future battlefields. LEST WE FORGET!
