@Canageek @SRLevine @siderea My first proper job in 1998 still had old school internal mail. The mail guy came by your desk at least twice a day, taking stuff out of your out tray and leaving mail in your in tray. In the pre-computer era it would likely have been 3-4 times a day, plus the postal service delivered twice or even three times a day, as mail speed was business critical. In London it was even possible to get letters delivered the same day at one stage.

@Canageek @SRLevine @siderea also worth noting that in a flu pandemic the editors would prioritise relevant work and might have bumped many other papers out of the queue
