It's easy to want to give up on public life when all our leaders seem to be completely missing the point. Debating the particular words to write in a strongly worded letter suggesting that maybe we shouldn't genocide quite so obviously, for example.
But I'm not ready to give up on democracy just yet. Democracy demands that we all stay engaged. We must hold our leaders and our fellow citizens accountable for the decisions we make. To think it's OK to go to war only if someone else pays the price is unconscionable. To outsource the ugly parts of governance to mercenaries and corporate overlords is to cede authority to fascists.
Instead of distancing ourselves from government because government is acting terribly, let's take back out power and get rid of those who claim to represent us but don't. When our leaders fail to fight with us it's time to get new leaders.
