Lakenheath Warren was one of my field sites when I did my PhD, 40 years ago - it was a much researched area for botany, which is why picked it. Within sight of the fence around RAF Lakenheath, my presence was checked out by the security services.
The existence of so many bases in the UK (largely England) remains rather disturbing. There's a reason Orwell called it "Airstrip One"...
