This seems like one of those ridiculous overblown things. I can't believe someone wrote a freaking hit piece about the guy opening these PRs. Does the author of that blog post think he's doing investigative journalism uncovering some kind of shady criminal?
Unix accounts already have fields like "full name" and "room number" and weird shit like that for historical reasons, and usually you just leave them empty. (The full name field is actually used sometimes, like by git, if I remember correctly.) What's the big deal if there's a birth date field as well? Literally who cares if it's just an arbitrary optional data field?
If this will eventually make parental controls easier, great! E.g. parent creates account for kid, enters birth date, then whenever the web browser is directed towards a website with an age limit, it checks it automatically. Voila, brilliantly simple solution to the problem where hardcore porn sites literally just show a popup asking "are you 18?" that's never turned away any kid, ever.
IT nerds who lose their mind over absolutely nothing because of some "principle" or some slippery slope fallacy annoy the fuck out of me. Save your energy for the day something actually bad happens.
Seriously, going after the guy who opened those harmless PRs, with some fancy hit piece article showing something that looks like a freaking mug shot, is actual pathological behaviour. The author should touch grass.
