I think the kompromat was a fundamental component of his operation. If he were to arrange victims for you to abuse, obviously you would acquire incriminating information about him in the course of that engagement. He would obviously need you to provide similarly incriminating information implicating yourself, as surety he wouldn't be blackmailed.
