@morc I had an idea to take some low-cost phone with NFC and place the NFC antenna next to the screen, with a custom 3D-printed case to have a prettier reader that's also easier to use/less confusing. It was then dismissed as it's hard to replace when the HW dies, since it's basically a custom hardware, just like the previous reader. (The polling rate would be still a mild problem, but it might be possible to (ab)use Android APIs somehow…)
