What is a reasonable amount of time to wait for a response to a work-related e-mail? By "work-related" I don't mean an email sent to a current co-worker necessarily, but an email sent in the context of what one does for work, paid or volunteer, and requesting a response.

Thanks for the responses. Email has been my preferred mode of communication since it became widely available (I'm Gen X). I recognize I'm a minority in that respect. Regardless, when a known person emails me and requests a response, I normally try to answer the same day. I don't expect this of others, but I do get irritable if I don't get a requested response within a couple of days, and even more so if I need to reach out repeatedly.

@funcrunch I voted for 2 days, of course not including weekends/holidays. Might be shorter if it is really urgent without the fault of the involved parties.

@funcrunch … I … don’t know the answer but this toot did prompt me to check a not exactly work response that I was waiting (gulp) 2 weeks to respond to.
