Then, one day, we plugged a colleague’s HP laptop into my monitor and once I returned to my laptop again, the video again stopped working. I had a spare Caldigit USB-C dock lying around and switched to using that, feeding the monitor via HDMI from the dock.

@drmikepj I have Lenovo laptop and it was working fine with Lenovo dock until a security update stopped the second monitor from working. Switching to an older dell dock I get both monitors ( occasionally have to replug if it goes into sleep mode) but an annoying message saying it's not charging fast enough. I'm not sure how much of the issue is hardware and how much is drivers manufacturers trying to force you use their own hardware. It's not the utopia though.
