given "tech users" love complexity and they have huge influence on open source development ... I think a good way fwd to have options for the UI
1. a complex "traditional" mode
2. a modern simplified UI+UX (what you, what happens) for "new users / beginners / whatever you name it"
Most people do 10% of the functions 90% of the time.

@simulo expanding on the "ugliness" the icons and imagery 1. are inconsistent in design feel, that mix is jarring 2. render poorly at different scales 3. some are difficult to understand - quickly, for even at all - a crucial design objective
