#PennedPossibilities⁩ 995: "How do you balance making (emotional) demands on the reader with taking care of them?" Oh, come on. That is not how I approach writing stories. What I don't exactly demand from my readers, but kindly ask them for, is their attention to the story, and if they get emotionally invested in it, that's great; in turn, I can promise that I merely try to tell a good and hopefully fun-to-read story, but I'm not out to manipulate their reactions that way.
