So what's to be done? 3 response: #1 Double down on the old signals Maybe that means more things like interviews, to check researchers really understand the proposals they have written (risk of bias!). Some funders already have interviews for their major funding schemes (Wellcome, ERC), others are introducing them (MRC in the UK) Maybe it means letting reviewers adjust, getting used to seeing "excellent" proposals and shift their baseline for giving excellent scores Maybe 5/

@tomstafford Agreed, I think a good deal of opposition to AI use comes from the realization that it cheapens previously costly signals. I think we are (as a society) now discovering that a lot of processes relied on long-form text as a costly signal that a human spent some cognitive effort on this. These could have been for example rate-limiting mechanism (as for the scientific proposals you mentioned), or as indicator for learning (all of education).
