The book more than holds up. It is stunning, maybe more so because I have the whole of the six-book trajectory with me (having just finished The Rose Field), but I have forgotten most of the specifics of the plot of the first trilogy. Now I have the next two to look forward to. And maybe then I can tolerate the Iliad again.

While I am writing on writing, I should mention two more recent contemporary novels. Susan Choi's "Flashlight" builds on the reputation she earned with her debut novel, more ambitious and wider in scope. It denies us a tidy ending but gives us a realistic one. Also true for Ocean Vuong's "The Emperor of Gladness", more mature than his debut. Both bode well for future works, and I recommend them.
