@atpfm@mastodon.social I'm confused. It wasn't OK for Tim to kiss Trump's rear for Apple's sake, but it is OK for Tim to kiss Trump's rear for Ternus' sake? That is still Ternus & the Board's responsibility. Nothing has changed. Every time Cook kisses Trump's rear, that is Ternus doing it.

@atpfm@mastodon.social I am not sure about @siracusa@mastodon.social’s advice to young people that John Ternus is proof you don’t need an advanced degree to be successful (e.g., Apple CEO), considering that Ternus graduated nearly 10 years before many recent graduates were born. The credentialism/degree inflation is a modern problem.

@atpfm@mastodon.social haha, I get the audiophile thing. I'm always in favor of decent pro equipment, or maybe like a Rotel. But that stuff isn't crazy expensive. You can hear it on Apple Music. Everything is lossless now, use your fancy audio interfaces (Sound Devices?), you'll hear it. It also works with AirPods Max with USB-C wired. But I spend most of the programming day walking around with old AirPods Max wireless. I do notice when I switch to the audio interface. But that's a lot of listening to notice.

@atpfm@mastodon.social Here is some completely unfounded blind gossip: "The fruit company is going to buy a satellite company. It wouldn't have been allowed by the government before but they gave the government a secret key into their phones which they had never previously allowed. It is why the head of the company left." https://www.crazydaysandnights.net/2026/04/blind-item-10_0686796532.html

@atpfm@mastodon.social @marcoarment@mastodon.social Will Apple ever be a leader in AI models… probably not. Does that matter… absolutely not. AI is a commodity and a feature, not a platform. Apple will get enough AI, and companies that are nothing but AI will fail. So I feel, Apple failed at something that doesn’t matter much, so nothing bad for Cook there.

@atpfm@mastodon.social I largely agree with everyone on Tim Apple but imo tech people over rank AI. MS is apologizing for Windows & claiming to reduce copilot stuff (it's not really iirc). The darling of AI is already becoming passé. Ex: https://mastodon.social/@carnage4life@mas.to/116443578602305566 I know it makes for something exciting to talk about but short of an another innovation, I don't see LLMs on their own being anything special. Apple has the users and their data. An LLM that competently works with the data. Without the data it's a toy.

@atpfm@mastodon.social I’m ok with locking hardware features behind software, since it’s often cheaper (and faster which makes company more money) to have fewer product SKU since assembly line doesn’t have to be swapped / reconfigured. These savings can sometimes be passed down to users.

@atpfm@mastodon.social @siracusa@mastodon.social I have a Mac Pro armchair theory over coffee after listening to the live stream: they killed it before Ternus’s ascension to make it unambiguous that there wasn’t anything coming in the future. (We all certainly would have run rampant with it in limbo knowing he had an ATP Believe shirt in a closet somewhere)

@atpfm@mastodon.social with software locking, you could argue Sirus radio was a service like cable. Also the problem with paying for heated seats was that it was seen as a money grab on already expensive luxury cars. I think it was BMW. This wasn't some cheap KIA or Hyundai.

@atpfm@mastodon.social You're right that the masses care about convenience and price over quality. But we should be thanking, not dismissing, the minority who do care about quality. Caring about quality is not a character flaw. Those are the people who push for improvements that trickle down to everyone else. Is the person who spends more and inconveniences themself for a 1% improvement in video source quality all that different than someone who buys a Mac Pro to do... whatever John does on his Mac Pro?

@atpfm@mastodon.social @siracusa@mastodon.social @marcoarment@mastodon.social the clothes do indeed appear on podcasts. I know it from Search Engine, but there is also a store of theirs not too far from my house. That stuff is expensive, but not like high-fashion expensive. The Nike shoes make sense, because Tim Cook is the lead independent director at Nike! He kinda has to wear them. https://investors.nike.com/investors/corporate-governance/?toggle=directors

@atpfm@mastodon.social Regarding the most important subject covered in this podcast episode: For some unknowable reason, I wrote a thorough blog post about cuffing clothes a couple of years ago: 👇🏻 https://havn.blog/2024/02/18/what-makes-a.html Finally, it's relevant for something! I don't mind the technique @ejauch@mastodon.social posted elsewhere (https://mastodon.social/@ejauch/116445075325007446) — but it's not my favourite. If I were @marcoarment@mastodon.social, I'd try just folding the cuff x amount of times (and try with or without buttons).

Stephen who isnt an AV critique noticed a diff in video & audio so there is technical limitation that streamers have & it’s worse outside of US Another consideration is ownership - lose iTunes your “bought” collection is lost too Blu ray players are back in fashion: https://www.whathifi.com/tv-home-cinema/blu-ray-players/4k-blu-ray-sales-are-on-the-rise-but-one-key-ingredient-is-missing-for-a-vinyl-level-revival Convenience will always win e.g. I recall @siracusa@mastodon.social having lip sync issues that your fam didn’t care for 😅

@atpfm@mastodon.social If you’re gonna complain about play blu rays, that darned FBI screen you have to sit through that you cannot fast forward through. And the terrible subtitle fonts I guess that depends on the disc and the player? Streaming subtitles are better I’ll grant you that. Scrubbing on the BR player is more accurate and consistent. How the hell long does it take to play a BR disc? A minute? Come on, man!
