@BeaverGEGLChamp yes, but this is not due to government interference. Those alternatives exist. They're just not adopted widely.

@jay_peper You may have misunderstood what I'm saying so let me make myself 100% clear, Patent trolling was a huge problem before Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank International (2014) the damage done from patent trolling from the 90s to 2014 is part of the reason why FOSS was weakened. Without ideological patents from the start things could have been different and FOSS could be more prominent in artistic and document workflows. Hope this clarifies. But like I said the damage is already done.
