@tencate @AditiCollective grad school was fun. There was also a time where I and a couple other researchers got to divvy up PSC’s new Cray T3D for “flashy” experiments in the 2 months leading up to the Supercomputing conference in 1995. I think I got 3 weeks on 256 nodes … ran MICOM ocean code at high enough resolution to get Gulf Stream eddies and separation.

@tencate @AditiCollective Found the paper: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/222471933_A_comparison_of_data-parallel_and_message-passing_versions_of_the_Miami_Isopycnic_Coordinate_Ocean_Model_MICOM I'm sure an iPhone could probably carry out this computation these days, though RAM might be tight, iPhone 17 has 12GB and we listed memory use for the computation at 10GB ... we were proud of 2.4 gigaflops in 1994 though 😂
