@virtuosew I'm wondering if it was a character in Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber? But I haven't read that series in 30 years myself, so can't recall clearly.
Jennifer Roberson's Cheysuli series centers on shapeshifter humans with animal familiars. One of the books is called "Flight of the Raven." But I don't remember details of that either!

@courtcan I'm trying to to remember more, to help narrow the search. But the same friend (long since lost track of ) loaned me other Zelazny, so that's possible.
