@tpuddle @dgoldsmith I think there were moon mapping satelites pre-Apollo and other more recent missions. There's also the '2 weeks of darkness' that makes lunar rovers in some ways more complex than mars rovers.

It's true that the Moon’s lack of atmosphere and slow rotation make thermal management for surface missions a challenge. Two recent surface landers perished during the lunar night (but they weren't designed to survive it).
