Oh I looked in my email and the EFF is looking to get people to lobby against an age gating law for California that would ban anyone under 16 from social media and require everyone else to provide government ID to access social media. https://eff.salsalabs.org/stopcasocialban/index.html AB 1709 https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB1709

I would like to oppose AB 1709 https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB1709 I'm really sick of the government and someone in big tech trying to make us live under total surveillance where every action and statement can be tracked to a legal identity. A world with mandatory ID verification to speak is a world where the far right gets to hunt down and disappear anyone who criticizes them. "Report: US demands Reddit unmask ICE critic, summons firm to grand jury" https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/04/trump-admin-hounds-reddit-to-reveal-identity-of-user-who-criticized-ice/ Additionally some of this push for social media bans is coming from far right Christians who want to block access to knowledge about black history or LGBT people. It's related to their efforts to ban books about Black or marginalized communities. https://www.apa.org/monitor/2025/07-08/fighting-book-bans-censorship Just please vote no on this. If you want reforms to make social media less terrible. Try things like anti-trust laws to break up monopolies, maybe do a study about blocking infinite scroll. Also give people, especially kids better places to go, the USA doesn't have much physical world public space, everything is dominated by cars, private homes, or businesses. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/aug/21/city-good-children-popsicle-test-crime-property-play
