@Extra_Special_Carbon These days it stands for "WINE Is Not an Emulator" (heh). It is a compatibility layer that as @gabriel says, allows you to install and run compatible Windows programs as if they were native programs in Linux. Not every Windows feature has made it into WINE though, so certain niche software (especially art and creative software) requires applying some workarounds, or tolerance for minor glitches to work.

    @Extra_Special_Carbon For example; Clip Studio Paint has to be run in Windows 8 compatibility mode for the time being - there is currently a patch in development that would allow CSP to be run in Win 10/11 compatibility modes - but the maintainer has limited time to work on it.
