Hey 'shop locals, or anyone farther out following stuff like #fediblock I think we've talked something like this up before - we have had multiple rounds of spam that have involved abandoned and unmoderated instances that have been left with open registration. we usually defederate early and defederate often.
However, there are two instances, mastodon.cloud and mstdn.jp that have avoided this because of longstanding follow/follower connections. mastodon.cloud was an early-ish and large instance

What happened to these instances was they were sold by the founder to the owner of a badly behaved, widely defederated instance around 2020. They degraded from there and seem to have been completely abandoned in 2023. We continue to ponder defederating completely but that would cut connections. So I'd like to encourage anyone who has follows/followers with mastodon.cloud or mstdn.jp to identify if they're important, and maybe invite them to a new home. a #cloudSave operation, if ye will.
